Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Kenneth Olisa and his wife Julia visit Mildma

Mildmay were honoured and delighted to welcome Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Kenneth Olisa and his wife Julia to our Hospital.

It was an exciting and memorable beginning to 2016 as we welcomed HM Lord Lieutenant Kenneth Olisa, to our East London hospital. This was Mildmay’s first official visit in this our 150th anniversary year and followed on from the visit that Prince Harry made to the hospital in December to mark its official opening.

Kenneth Olisa is the first black Lord Lieutenant of Greater London and in November he topped the list of Britain’s most influential black people.

Kenneth and Julia made a tour of the hospital and joined in a sing-along with Mildmay’s day service clients who performed a rendition of the song they sang at Mildmay’s recent Carol Concert: ‘What A Wonderful World.’

As a technology entrepreneur, Kenneth was particularly interested in Mildmay’s new digital inclusion suite where vital rehabilitation work takes place. Here patients have access to brain training as well as re-learning skills that support independence and build confidence that have been lost due to HIV associated brain impairment. Important life skills such as shopping, socialising, travel planning and gathering information. The digital inclusion suite was recently created thanks to a generous donation by Wandsworth Oasis. http://wandsworthoasis.org.uk

The tour then moved to Mildmay’s Inpatient Unit where Kenneth and Julia met some patients and nursing staff.

Kerry Reeves-Kneip, Mildmay’s fundraising Director said: “ We were so thrilled that The Lord Lieutenant and his wife visited Mildmay today. His friendly and relaxed manner and genuine interest in our work gave a real boost to staff and patients. It was a wonderful afternoon.”

The visit closed in true Mildmay style with tea and cakes – we hope this will not be the last time Kenneth and Julia visit us here at Mildmay, it was an inspirational and memorable afternoon.
