Today marks a significant milestone for Mildmay Hospital as we celebrate five years since the admission of our first patient onto the Step-Down Homeless Medical Care Pathway on March 24th, 2020.

Our matron, Teri, remembers the day vividly as the world was grappling with the pandemic. That patient came to Mildmay to isolate after testing positive for COVID-19.

Reflecting on this moment, Teri said, "Today is 5 years to the day since we admitted our very first Homeless Pathway patient, who came to isolate as he had Covid. It’s a day I'm unlikely to forget!"

It was a time of uncertainty for Mildmay - two days before extraordinary lockdown measures came into force for the first time - but also hope as we were able to offer a safe space for vulnerable individuals to recover and begin their journey toward better health.

Since that day, Mildmay’s Step-Down Homeless Medical Care Pathway has provided essential care to hundreds of individuals who are homeless or rough-sleeping and recuperating from illness or injury, many of whom have complex health needs. From offering a safe discharge from acute hospital settings to supporting patients through post-detox recovery, this pathway remains a crucial part of the support we provide.

Mildmay Hospital is the first specialist unit to provide step-down medical care for the homeless population of London and other regions, addressing a huge unmet need for specialised medical care following treatment in an NHS hospital/acute centre.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past five years. Here's to many more years of helping the most vulnerable among us on the road to recovery.
