Cardinal Vincent Nichols visits Mildmay

It was a real honour to welcome His Eminence Cardinal Vincent Nichols to Mildmay, where he met staff, volunteers and patients. As soon as Cardinal Vincent stepped through our doors he brought great warmth and a sense of gentle peace, putting everyone at ease with his relaxed manner and gentle humour. Cardinal Vincent attended a short service in Mildmay’s small chapel, and led the reflection. He spoke of the early days of HIV, when Mildmay brought kindness and compassion into so many lives. Cardinal Vincent then toured William Ward with our head of nursing and heard about some of Mildmay’s specialised work treating and rehabilitating people with complex and severe health conditions caused by HIV, including HIV associated brain impairment.

Guests joined patients, staff and volunteers to relax and enjoy afternoon tea in the June sunshine in our hospital’s beautiful courtyard garden. Cardinal Vincent gave his time so warmly, meeting and chatting to patients, visitors and staff. It was indeed another very special day for Mildmay Hospital.

Cardinal Vincent’s parting words were – :” I’ve come to a place that is full of joy, characterised by the generosity and care of so many people, both patients and staff. This is a setting in which much careful help is given, medically and personally. Mildmay is a house of joy, of hope, of healing.”
